Los Angeles: The Unspoken Truth About Hollywood

“Everybody comes to Hollywood…how could it hurt you when it looks so good?”
(Madonna, 2003)

Madonna isn’t wrong. I mean, who doesn’t want to go to Hollywood? I’ve wanted to go to Hollywood since as long as I can remember, but what surprised me is that I ended up loving Hollywood for everything I never knew of it before.

Without getting into the depths of American history, since the 1970’s, the homeless population in LA has been pretty bad (if you haven’t heard of it, read about Skid Row – I’ll be making a post about Skid Row later on) and in Hollywood, it’s noticeably bad. By and large, these people will not bother you but do not be surprised to see at least 10 homeless people by the time you reach Madame Tussauds. The homeless are extremely prominent on Hollywood Blvd, Sunset Blvd and the side streets that connect the two. I’m telling you this because unless you know, I bet this isn’t something you thought you would find in the glitz and glam of Hollywood. The reality is, Hollywood isn’t glamorous (for that, head to Beverly Hills and Bel Air) – it’s crowded, loud, dirty and utterly charming. I mean, where else could I have seen Mickey Mouse and a Stormtrooper crossing the road at 1am other than on Hollywood Blvd?

I’m serious, this happened…

Once you know (and it helps to be pre-warned) about the homeless that reside around Hollywood Blvd and the reality of Hollywood itself, I challenge you to not find yourself in awe with it. Hollywood will challenge your expectations, but it does not leave you disappointed.

On another note, if you have spare change at the end of your trip, why not think about donating some of it to these people? You can’t change your coins back over to your native currency, so why not give it to someone who truly needs it?

We’ll look into all the positives of Hollywood and Hollywood Blvd in the next few posts – I promise, they exist!
